Custom Design

Karemoana Drive, Te Atatu

The house in Te Atatu was designed to suit the seafront landscape while sitting naturally in an urban subdivision. The owners wanted the house to imbue notions of a bach and in specifying stained bandsawn timbers architect John Durkin gave it a rustic and natural feel.  The stained timber balustrade to the front deck gives privacy while leaving the view of the Waitemata Harbour untouched.

The brief was for the design to be timeless and essentially Kiwi, while making the most of passive solar design for energy efficiency including solar water heating. Despite the house being connected to the mains water supply rain water is collected into an underground concrete tank and plumbed to all toilets, laundry and outdoor taps. There are a number of different covered outdoor areas around the house which always provide outdoor space whatever the direction of the wind.
